International technology group ANDRITZ hassigned a contract – as part of a consortium with the European constructiongroup STRABAG – with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to supply andcommission the entire electro- and hydro-mechanical equipment for the HattaPumped Storage Power Plant located in the Hajar Mountains 140 km southeast ofthe city of Dubai.
Startup is expected for the first quarterof 2024. The contract value for the electro- and hydro-mechanical equipment ismore than 100 million euros.
ANDRITZ will provide the electromechanicalequipment for two 125 MW Francis-type pump turbines with double-fedasynchronous generators and auxiliary systems, all gates and trashracks, 320 mof penstocks, main inlet valves, main power transformers, GIS switchyard, andhigh-voltage cables to connect the new power plant to the national grid. Adetailed model test to guarantee the characteristics of the turbine will beconducted in ANDRITZ’s own test laboratories.
Hatta will be the first project of its kindon the Arabian Peninsula. The final concept is based on a shaft-type powerhouseclose to the existing hydro reservoir, capable of providing 250 MW for sixhours. Due to the relatively limited reservoir capacity, the available headwill vary significantly between 175 and 125 m during the cycle. To overcomethis substantial variation in head but still keep the units running at a highefficiency level over the complete cycle, both pump turbine units are equippedwith double-fed asynchronous motor-generators, allowing the units to operate atvariable speed.
Dubai has the clear goal to diversify theemirate’s energy mix and increase the share of renewable energy from thecurrent level of 7 to 75% by 2050. To achieve this ambitious target, DEWAdecided not only to increase the share of power generation from renewablesources, like photovoltaics and wind power, but also to build the necessaryhydro-pumped storage capacity required to balance the volatility of theserenewable energy sources.
ANDRITZ is one of the few global suppliersto have reference projects and expertise for such specific technologies. Awardof this order is a very important milestone for ANDRITZ and its consortiumpartners because this prestigious contract is considered a lighthouse projectfor DEWA and the entire region. In securing this contract, ANDRITZ has onceagain confirmed its position as a leading supplier for electromechanicalequipment in the hydropower industry.
